Having lived in America all my life, I guess my education on "Irish History in America" must have gotten lost. Every time I drive through Arizona from now on, I will remember this story. I have never gotten use to the fact that humans are so barbaric as to buy and sell other people, but for the horrors that people inflict upon babies and children is just unconcionable.

Very sad. What a fascinating maelstrom of conflicting interests and perspectives: "White" v. "brown," North/East v. West/South, Protestant v. Catholic, rich v. poor, management v. labor, law v. disorder, urban v. rural, industrialism v. public health, and on and on and on. I can hardly imagine the state of these children caught up in the middle of all of this. Having gone through all they already had, and with no concept of their future. Heartbraking.

I recently read "Orphan Train" by Christina Baker Kline, a fictional account of the orphan trains. The main character was an Irish oprhan, Naimh, whose parents died in a fire after immigrating. It's almost unbelievable this really happened.
