I thought this might be appropriate. A little bit of Irish history, but as a mother might see it. I can only imagine the…

When the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) marched up Fifth Avenue in New York’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade it should have been crystal clear, if it wasn't already, that this parade is incompatible with any serious effort to support Irish freedom. The PSNI is the…

I remember, as a child, playing over and over again our old 78-rpm records of John McCormack’s songs, which had been the property of my late grand uncle and namesake. Many of the songs…

Inis Mór
It is the call of the sea and the crashing waves
the songs of men given up to watery graves
The fishermen's chatter and pony cart's clatter
The seal's call and the wild rain splatter…

John Montague is one of Ireland’s best known contemporary poets. He is the author of many books of poetry, stories, memoirs and essays. In his work Ireland is a recurring theme and in many of his poems he draws on his experiences as a young boy in Tyrone (for example, in The…

Of all the great men and women of that era, was there a more gallant figure than Joseph Mary Plunkett, or a more hopeless love than that of Plunkett and Grace Gifford? They were to be married in a church on St Stephen’s Green on April 23, Easter Sunday, 1916, but history…

I woke up at 4:45 am a few days ago and within 5 minutes, this was forming in my head so I got up and starting jotting down some the words. I went back to bed but the thoughts wouldn't let me sleep! So I got up again and by 7 am I had this tweaked and ready. I submit it for your thoughts.
God bless Ireland
In her patchwork dress so green
Her blue Atlantic eyes are smiling
Full…

Your beauty has beguiled it seems,
Of mountainside patchwork fields I dream
Moody sky with clouds dark-clad
Give way to sun that warms hearts glad
Blooming pathways, hidden charm
The windswept way to hillside farm
Painted sheep dot sweeping hill
Listen to the swallows trill…

Hey there all. Since my trip to Ireland with The Waterford Gathering this June past, I have been smitten with the place and have taken even more of an interest in all things Irish! I have even written a poem which although personal, I would like to have critiqued by someone literary. I am a complete amateur so don't expect anything amazing ; ) Would anyone here be willing to give it a go? Warning! - I am very sensitive so go easy on me as it is only meant to be personal, well, at least for…

She even calls her puppy Seamus.
Linda Opyr began her tribute to Seamus Heaney with the story of her naming her new dog after the recently deceased Seamus Heaney, the Noble Prize Laureate in Literature in 1995, a native of Derry. Dr. Linda Opyr presented her tribute to Heaney at the October 16 meeting of the Irish Cultural Society at the Garden City…

Err....umm, well it was something I posted on The Irish Times commenting on one of
the articles there.
I came late to his poems
A lil young foundling I think I could and would be
To such a wise and magical sage; such as he
He whose poems spoke of the Irish truth;
Of le Irish way of living then;
Days of yore that…

From the Frontier Of Writing
The tightness and the nilness round that space
when the car stops in the road, the troops inspect
its make and number and, as one bends his face
towards your window, you catch sight of more
on a hill beyond, eyeing with intent
down cradled guns that hold you under cover
and everything is pure interrogation
until a rifle motions and you move
with guarded unconcerned…

I identified strongly with this poem from the first time I heard it spoken. Much like the follower that was Seamus in his childhood, I followed behind my father and grandfather as they worked cattle and handled ranch duties ... mimicking, getting under foot and learning, growing, as I did.
And now ... in the silver times, my father is slowing, jabbering on, following my lead ... sometimes:

I, for one, can’t wait. When the time longs into my soul and the creak in my knees cause gentle steps, I’ll grow long my eyebrows. I’ll let them loose on my face as I chase away the last days of my living.…
