Fragments of Time

After watching the video of Genetic ghosts, I kept recalling one of my poems, written in preparation for our first performance tour in Ireland back in 2005. I set to understanding the feelings I awakened during my visit the first year in the only way I knew best, rhythm and rhyme.…

Breithlá Shona Duit, W.B. Yeats!

I thought it was worth noting that today, June 13th, is the anniversary of the birth of Irish poet, W.B. Yeats.  William Butler Yeats was born on June 13, 1865 in Sandymount, County Dublin.  He would go on to be among the most influential writers in the 20th century -- not just in Ireland, but throughout the world.  He was a driving force behind the Irish…

'This Could Be Heaven': Excerpt from 'Galway Stories'

An excerpt from John Walsh's short story, This Could Be Heaven

It all starts in Monroe’s. This time of year they keep a fire burning, and I am freezing; the winds that get twisted around the corners of Dominick Street are fierce. She is standing right where I would like to be, holding her hands…

'Over the Edge' at Cúirt

My qualifications for reviewing modern Irish literature are limited to:

    - I live in Ireland, and,

    - I like books

With that disclaimer...

The Over the Edge Showcase was, for me, a highlight of the Cúirt International Festival of Literature.  The event was billed as giving “a platform to emerging poets and…

Friday at Cúirt: The Galway Experience in a Nutshell

As the Cúirt International Festival of Literature entered its third day, it became apparent early on that it was going to be a day in which one would be exposed to the true "Galway experience."

The highlight of the day, for me, was the Literary Walk through Galway City.  This was a free event, and a large group of literature buffs…

Spring Poems ~ A Favorite of Mine

SPRING

NOTHING is so beautiful as spring --

When weeds, in wheels, shoot long and lovely and lush;

Thrush's eggs look little low heavens, and thrush

Through the echoing timber does so rinse and wring

The ear, it strikes like lightnings to hear him sing;

The glassy peartree leaves and blooms, they brush

The descending blue; that blue is all in a rush

With richness; the racing lambs too have fair their fling.

What is all this juice and all this…
