New York -- Dozens of individuals filled the terrace at the Irish Consul General's quarters in Manhattan's East Side on May 28 to learn more about "The Rising," a film project led by film producer Kevin McCann, head of Ireland-based Maccana Teoranta. Irish Consul General Barbara Jones served as host for the reception, which featured spectacular views…

Suppose you could go to the movie theater and see a film about working people, struggling against great odds to enrich the quality of their lives. And suppose that instead of relying on a great individual leader, they made their own decisions and fought their own battles.
Then you would have a…

I leave for New York this week in preparation of the film screenings that take place from New York to Detroit through Philly, Baltimore, Hamilton in Canada and Rochester. We have produced two feature films based on true stories from the Famine era. The first, "The Minnitts of Anabeg," will screen in the Aisling Center in Yonkers on Wednesday, July 15. "The Cormack Brothers" screens on July 22.
We are screening to an Irish-American audience at this stage, taking the films and their…

As a child, "The Great Escape" was one film that never failed to entertain me. Aside from a stellar cast that included Steve McQueen, Richard Attenborough (above), Charles Bronson, James Garner and a host of others, the story was compelling and also happened to be true.
It’s…

There is a certain type of Irishman who looms large in fiction: The "haunted man," the "angry man," the "tortured man," the "violent man," the "quiet man." He is a cliche ... but a cliche born of so much truth it is a bit like encountering an old friend when he shambles onto…

It was a very determined and indignant Irish woman who stood before a clerk at the Los Angeles immigration court in 1946. Maureen FitzSimons (aka Maureen O’Hara) had passed the required exam for US citizenship when she was instructed to forswear allegiance to England. She replied,…

When I first visited the U.S., in 1985 for a summer holiday, I was amused and entertained by the clever television advertisements. The one that sticks out in my brain has the line "Let's talk about you. What do you think of me?" at the end. It always made me laugh. Or it used to,…

I absolutely loved this short film by Wild Geese member and fellow County Tyrone author, Colin Broderick.
It's called "Smile," and it's a visual poem set in New York. Lyrical and melancholic, like so much Irish poetry, it is, in the end an uplifting story of transformation and renewal.
Enjoy!
