Donegal NY GAA Gets Nipped in Junior League Championship

The following info was presented to me by a friend and fellow Donegal Association of NY colleague, Ira Goldman.  If you would like to get involved with the Donegal NY GAA, you may contact him at the address below or follow on FaceBook.

Thanks, TD

Only one ball got past St. Michael’s product James McFadden but that shot to the net was the difference as Rockland nipped Donegal NY for the Junior League crown. The final looked to be more of a romp for the lads from…

Another 'Fairy Trip'

Bit, I told Janet earlier about you calling these kind of trips I make Fairy Trips....and she laughed. Later, she turned round and asked me what I had said about Fairies.

The more I think about this, I smile - travelling through Ireland with nary a care in the world, not worrying about where you are going because when you get there you will find something worth remembering - it is actually a fairy trip. Earlier today we were trying to get home from Castlecomer and I saw a sign…

Sunnyside's St. Patrick's Day 'Parade for All' - and They Mean it!

I ventured back to my old neighborhood in Sunnyside, Queens to take in the annual “Parade for All” which I haven’t attended in recent years. I remember the parade when it first started roughly fifteen years ago and back then it was more of a street fair. It was really nice for what…

Wild Geese Flags

Sorry for delay with the requests regarding flags. I had to work out some details before committing to print. We don't do flags commercially, all flags would be one off commissioned work. But we do appreciate that some people may want a flag for various personal reasons and…

A Fathers' Day Gift for My Late Father

So often do I hear my friends say: ‘I wish my father were here now to see/hear this’. Indeed many of us who have lost our parents find ourselves often, in our later years, thinking of them and wishing we could spend even…

My First Trip to Ireland - My Journey Home

Last winter, a year after my husband died, I decided to take my first trip to Ireland, birthplace of my ancestors.

I don’t have many regrets in my life, but not finding a way to take my father, Edwin Concannon, to Ireland will always be at the top of my list. There were always reasons why I couldn’t do it — raising a child, financial, not enough vacation time, and then…

Life With Joe, Before and After His Illness

Bendigo Remembers Brian Boru

On Sunday May 18 around sixty people attended a concert in Bendigo to celebrate the victory of Brian Boru at the Battle of Clontarf in 1014. Organised by the Central Victoria Irish Association the event took place at the historic Brian Boru Hotel, established in the 1850s at the height of the ‘gold rush’ era. Where else?

A lively and entertaining program of music,…

‘The Irish Pub’ Reviewed: The Perfect Pint and a Fabulous Film

What draws me back to Ireland over and over again?  There’s the stunning physical beauty.  But what makes a beautiful place so special?  For me, it’s the people: their intellect, passion, warmth and wit.  There’s no better place to find this than in an Irish pub and in the…

Maher / Meagher and others

I have a net friend, Janet Maher and we've known one another a long time and a couple of years ago (2012) I said to one friend I am NEVER going back to the US again and the very next day I get an email from Janet saying 'book published, launch on such a date" and I said to myself 'That's it Lyons, you're going back to America"

Off I went for about 2.5 weeks.

I'd been in the U.S. a number of times but this time, it was so different.  This time I did not have to pay to stay in…

First Cousin? Second Cousin?

The terms “first cousin once removed” and “second cousin” are often confused. When the term “removed” is used, it indicates that the two people are from different generations.  Second cousins have the same great grandparents but not the same grandparents.…

Old Roman Catholic Church, Couraguneen, Tipperary, Ireland

This was actually one of the most interesting Churches I have been to because most of the side walls and the back wall had been knocked down and yu could still see the tiles from the inside of the Church and the wall remnants as you stood beside it.

I went off here because one day, a man on my FB page told me I had been close to a Church his family used to go to one day when I said I has walked the dogs around a bog beside the train line out the Templemore Road.  So, next day i was…

Church of Ireland, Dunkerrin, Offaly (King's Co.), Ireland.

This is actually a very pretty little church and the thing about it is that it is on my way from Laois to Tipperary as I was a few weeks ago on my way to Nenagh. You literally drive through this little patch of Offaly and then you are into Tipperary. I have done the graveyard a good while ago but I haven't checked my site to get a link. Been at the computer for about 2 hours now and all I seem to be doing is talking!!!…
