Thomas McKean: first man elected to hold the office as President of the United States... (Under Articles of Confederation). There's a pub-quiz question for you... But you have to phrase it right: Samuel Huntington _assumed_ the role first, in transition from presiding over the Continental Congress; and he may have been selected after - but refused to accept office on grounds of ill-health, if I remember correctly. So McKean was the first actually elected to hold the office of President, of the the first permanent institution specifically styling itself "United States".

Chief Dennis Sullivan. An Irish-American from New York state he headed West in the 1870s and joined the legendary Empire & Eagle Hose Companies. San Francisco in the 1870s was still very much a city of fire and gold & the firemen of San Francisco were often the only thing standing between the --mainly wood-- city and absolute destruction. He served the city valiantly for over 30 years eventually rising to the rank of Chief. He died as a result of injuries sustained while attempting to halt the spread of the fire that destroyed much of San Francisco in the wake of the Great Earthquake of 1906.
