Some years ago when I first started genealogy research no one in the family had any knowledge about any ancestors and I discovered my GG grandfather William Mills Daley, he was from America and only yesterday I managed to find more detail but not of his family in America.William was crew member of a whaling schooner called the "Emily" which was built in St.Mary's Georgia USA in 1825. he joined the crew in the year 1835 in Stonington Connecticut USA, on a whaling expedition to the south Atlantic. The ship was wrecked on the 16th October 1836, almost a hundred years to the day I was born, off the island of Tristan Da Cunha. The crew and captain "Benjamin Ash" were all rescued by the islanders. A month later a passing ship took all but three of the crew off the island. Those that remained were my GG grandfather, Pieter Groen a Dutchman and Peter Muller a Dane. Wiiliam Daley, married some years later Elizabeth, the daughter of William Glass, the leader of the colony. He was from Kelso in Scotland. At the end of 1856 William Daley left the island seeking a better future for his family, they arrived in 1857 at the Cape of Good Hope {Cape Town) South Africa. They trekked by ox wagon to a small country town called "Riversdale" in the Cape Province, where they settled and Daley family grew and multiplied and thus the start of my mothers family in South Africa.I am still trying to find the American family connection which hopefully would have led me back to my Irish family. Will write to the New Bedford Whaling Museum and also the National Maritime Museum, hopefully they will have detailed records of the crew members of the Emily, this could go a long way to narrowing down the search for William Daley family. I have no idea what records were kept by the Irish of people who left Ireland from 1935 and earlier. I am hoping that there are more knowledgeable people than I, who are able to point me in the right directions. The only mention in the family many years ago about where our family originated was "Larne" and "Cork" how accurate that is I do not know. Heres hoping for an Irish miracle.

Regards to all

Donald
