If you are interested in understanding the history of Irish immigration to America and the subsequent pattern of settlement behind many of the Irish communities we are familiar with today a good knowledge of how our railroads, canals, bridges, etc were built can be very useful, And the Irish who worked on many of these projects were not limited to the years after the famine in Ireland for Irishmen were working on the Erie Canal and other such projects before the 1840s in New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland and west of there. My own Scots-Irish ancestors from County Tyrone followed the extension of the new National Road (now US 40) perhaps because as a wheelwright he knew he would find work as merchants and migrants wore out their wagons on the new road. One of my fondest memories is of the dinner table conversation with Daniel Patrick Moynihan and Paddy Devlin about the patterns of Irish immigration and settlement in America and how it reflected their work experience!
